An audiovisual site-specific installation that celebrates Italian craftsmanship in occasion of the 60° anniversary of the Salone del Mobile of Milan.
La Scatola Magica (“The Magic Box”) is a “darkroom” that hosts a true 3-act spectacle. Visitors, as they enter the Box, are enveloped by darkness and mystery: everything they see are illuminated frames. As soon as the music starts, the artworks printed and projected inside the frames are revealed. The Box becomes then a dashing art gallery.
In the second act, the puppets of the Carlo Colla and Sons Company present the 11 stories, inspired by the 11 key words of the Manifesto, made by 11 major exponents of Italian filmmaking, from Francesca Archibugi to Pappi Corsicato, from Claudio Giovannesi to Daniele Ciprì. The box hence turns itself into a movie theatre in which each word is interpreted and narrated according to the sensitivity and signature style of each director.
The ending is a coup de theatre. As the Box’s external curtain opens, with a marvellous lightshow the “landscape” surrounding and hosting the installation is unveiled: the Sala delle Cariatidi of Palazzo Reale. A full-fledged final triumph enhanced by the ending of Mahler’s Symphony of a Thousand.
